Bendigo is Victoria's fourth largest city, with a rich and prosperous heritage dating back to the days when gold was discovered in the area in the 1850s. Since then, Bendigo has been the second highest producing goldfield in Australia and remains the seventh largest in the world.

Bendigo's rich gold history has produced a city of opulence and grandeur. Stunning architecture, manicured gardens and the Alexandra Fountain at the entrance to the city centre are all symbolic of Bendigo. The city is situated in a fertile valley, surrounded by a number of hilly suburbs featuring wide tree-lined streets, bushland, and a several large reserves, creating a pleasant and green environment for residents and visitors. A number of lakes and reservoirs are located within the city, including the most central, Lake Weeroona, which is surrounded by gardens and parkland.

As of July 2008 the population of Bendigo had reached 100,000 people. In total 6.1 % of the population was born overseas from 30 different countries. Half these people are from the United Kingdom or New Zealand.

The climate in Bendigo is generally dry and mild with cold winters. In summer the average temperature is 28 degrees, while in winter the average is 3.5 degrees. Temperatures do sometimes reach higher in summer with the hottest temperature ever recorded being 47 degrees in January 1862.

The area of Bendigo is 2998.97KM2. Bendigo is currently in a drought, with some of the harshest water restrictions in Australia being imposed. Bendigo's local water storages are the lowest ever.
